COVID-19 Update | THURS 3/26: Secret Identities & Flying Under the Radar

Our local school district was on Spring Break during the week of 3/9, so we have taken a moment to review evolving CDC and MN Dept of Health guidance meant to contain the spread of COVID-19. In the last 48 hours, Washington County Public Libraries have made related announcements.

With community safety measures in mind, our March meeting is CANCELLED  and we will explore options for having this C.H.A.T. through other means.

Consider using the March discussion article to transform these weeks of quarantine into an opportunity for kids’ secret identities to thrive and spill out into the open.

  • We’re preparing the March chapter newsletter with ways to support families through these independent learning and exploration days — sign up here.
  • On Facebook? Stay connected through the MCGT page and members-only group!

This month’s MCGT C.H.A.T. invites area parents and educators to connect and talk through the impact of asking kids to hide or downplay their abilities, ideas, enthusiasm for developing interests, or innate aspects of who they are. How do we nurture kids’ resilience and sense of identity while helping them to develop humility and the ability to be gracious? Especially when these same behaviors can be a struggle for adults!

WHEN |
THURSDAY 3/26, 6:00 – 7:30pm
WHERE | Oakdale Public Library, Large Conference Room

What messages do we send kids when society praises or prioritizes certain abilities but not others? When we are reluctant to talk openly about ‘giftedness,’ what it is and what it’s not? Download the student essay and article by Lisa Van Gemert that inspire tonight’s discussion.

MCGT members and newcomers all are welcome! C.H.A.T. Nights are a great way to meet other people who are figuring out how to help young people navigate their GT identities at home, at school, and as they grow. No child care is available at this event.
