THURS 11/15 @ 6:30pm | Growth Conditions: Helping Kids Who are Ready for More
Pediatricians show you kids’ physical growth trends and offer guidance. How do you know when to advocate for different growth conditions for learning — or what to ask for? Tammie Stewart is our guest from Northwestern University’s Center for Talent Development (CTD).
TOPIC | Growth Conditions: Knowing How to Help Kids Who Are Ready for More (Flyer color & grayscale .pdf)
WHEN | Thursday, 11/15, 6:30 – 8:30 pm
WHERE | Room 103B @ Oak-Land Middle School, 820 Manning Ave. N, Lake Elmo
What do you do for a kid who breezes through school? Who reaches for more complex books, explores interests more deeply, or solves more complex problems than what are taught at grade level? Who maybe grumbles about ‘too easy’ work or feels ‘real learning’ starts once the school day ends? How do you help a kid who scores in the 95th percentile but shows low growth relative to ability?
Tammie will answer your questions and introduce evidence-based ways to support talented students in grades 3-9 who show high academic strengths and need more challenge, including a Young Scholars program that can fund kids’ enrichment through high school and beyond. Independent evidence can be a valuable tool to help you collaborate with educators to create good growth conditions as kids continue to develop their strengths, interests, and future goals.
NOTE: Room 103B is down the hallway on your right as you enter Oak-Land Middle School. It is helpful, but not necessary, if you arrive knowing your student’s 2018 MCA percentiles in Reading and Math (90% or higher), or have access to recent MAP, NWEA and/or CogAT scores.
